Preventable infections cause many illnesses and deaths each year. They also contribute to high medical costs. Some infectious diseases can be prevented with vaccinations. Others are preventable and treatable if people take steps to prevent transmission of the infection and seek treatment. Some are acquired in health care settings, such as a hospital, where appropriate protocols and care can aid in prevention.

Here you can view state-level data on three indicators of how well we are controlling infectious diseases in Colorado. These were selected because they represent communicable diseases of significant burden that can be prevented. These indicators are:
  • Percentage of kindergarteners who are up to date on their DTaP vaccinations when they begin school
  • Rate of gonorrhea among people ages 15-29
  • Rate of central line-associated bloodstream infections
